Life’s deepest transformations cannot be rushed, no matter how much we want to skip ahead.

One of the most satisfying inventions in human history may be the “Skip Intro” icon that appears on the television screen when binge watching reruns of “Father Brown,” “Person of Interest” or some other series.

Its cousin, “Skip Ad,” offers similar satisfaction. After a few seconds, we can click it and move on to the main attraction.

The “Skip” button is one symptom of a much larger cultural condition. We’ve engineered a civilization that treats delay as an intolerable flaw. Amazon Prime has conditioned us to think that two-day shipping borders on negligence. DoorDash has convinced us that driving 10 minutes to pick up tacos ourselves constitutes hardship. GPS systems trigger emotional distress when they announce, “Recalculating,” because apparently one unexpected detour represents a catastrophic failure of the transportation infrastructure.
