On Gaudete Sunday, John the Baptist has very simple guidelines that will help us recover the joy and simplicity of Christmas.

Grocery stores are reorganizing their entrances so the first thing you see is a softly lit area with hardwood floors and produce bins full of colorful polished apples, gleaming purple eggplants, leafy green cabbages, mounds of white onions, and golden honeydew melons. Large barrels overflowing with a variety of nuts, beans, granola and trail mix tempt you from the perimeter and channel you through the aisles.

Our palates are becoming more adventurous, and according to sources, “interest has continued to grow in heirloom and exotic varieties of fruits and vegetables.” We’re not just shopping for broccoli; we want the unique and lesser-known Romanesco broccoli. We want dragon fruit, blood-red oranges and watermelon radishes. Are they really out of purple cauliflower again? Sigh …

We used to be happy if the grocery store offered several varieties of apples. Do we really need more choices than Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Fuji and Gala?
