Some of the disciples were upset that there were some people not in their clique who were doing some pretty amazing things. Do we ever feel the same way?
The Disney Club 33, the Beefsteak Club, the Bilderberg Club, the Giga Society, the Woodcock Club, the Trilateral Commission, the Ejection Tie Club, the Association of the Dead, the Bohemian Club and the Seven Society (for more on some of these, see the sidebar on page 48).
These clubs are among the most elite in the world. The reason we bring this up is because of what the disciple John says in our text: "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us" (v. 38 NIV). The Message puts it this way: "We stopped him because he wasn't in our group" (emphasis added both instances)
The disciples clearly had already developed an "us versus them" mentality. Perhaps we're no different. When you're a member of an exclusive club, whether somebody is "one of us" or not is terribly important. That's certainly the case for these contemporary ultra-elite clubs.
