Faith and the Status Quo

In Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the status quo has been codified and enshrined in an actual 250-year-old document known as the Status Quo. Good thing the ancient patriarchs were willing to abandon the status quo. 

If you want to denigrate someone — a third party — while chatting with a friend over lunch at a local bistro, you might use one of the most popular put-downs ever: “They’re stuck in the status quo.”

Of course, you wouldn’t want to be unkind to anyone. You’re a pastor and a Christian. You’re beyond this sort of backstabbing and gossiping.

Still, how many times in your career have you grumbled about this board member or that committee as being stuck in the status quo and too eager to live by Status Quo Rules (SQRs)?

Search online about the status quo. Very few people have anything nice to say about it. Instead, they say things like:

• Being satisfied with the status quo means you are not making progress;
• Challenge your own status quo before someone else does;
• The status quo is simply unacceptable;
• Dare to go beyond the status quo; and,
• Challenging the status quo takes commitment, courage, imagination and, above all, dedication to...
