The Power of the Hidden Influencer

Snowball sampling helps researchers discover "hidden influencers." Both the wise and foolish groups in Jesus' parable had them, and they're in the church, too.

Let's talk about snowballs.

Actually, "snowball sampling." We're not talking about measuring the size and density of actual snowballs. (Note: If you've had an early snowstorm in your region of the country, you might stow a few snowballs of different sizes in a thermo-case, and pull them out as you're speaking.) The snowball in this context is a research tool.

Snowball sampling is used by sociologists for exploratory research.

For example, you're not likely to find a list of homeless people in your city. So how would you develop a ministry to the homeless?

You might use snowball sampling. You would find one or two homeless people to help you. They know other homeless individuals in their area and can help you locate them.
