A lawsuit was filed — by a politician — in a Nebraska courtroom, naming God as the defendant. It’s not the first time it’s happened and won’t be the last.

Ernie Chambers has a beef with God.

Lots of people do, mind you, but for Ernie it’s not just a theological matter, it’s a litigious one.

Ernie is a state senator from Omaha, Nebraska, who’s known around the state as a bit of a firebrand, taking controversial stands on issues. After a lawsuit was filed in federal court that Ernie considered to be frivolous, he decided to attack the issue by proving that anyone can sue anyone at any time.

So Ernie lawyered up and decided to sue God.

The suit, filed in September 2007, accuses God of “making and continuing to make terroristic threats of grave harm to innumerable persons, including constituents of Plaintiff who Plaintiff has the duty to represent.” In addition, God has caused “fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like” as well as “calamitous...
